– Lancaster & Chester (L&C) “Delivery Brown 1-1952” illustrates the second railroad to order these PS-1 box cars with 9’ Doors.  The Southern Railway ordered more than 2,000 of these 9’ door cars during the transition era, but interchange railroad partner Lancaster & Chester – a smaller railroad located off the Southern Railway between Charlotte and Columbia SC also ordered these cars for delivery from Pullman-Standard in 1952!  These cars have distinctive “early” side sill configurations that have a pronounced deep side sill support underneath the door area only, ending before the trucks.  These models have the early version of the Superior 9’ door, and Miner handbrake housings and wheels like the prototype did.  These cars have the “classic” transition-era red carbody.  Stenciling includes the classy “The Springmaid Line” logo on the right side of the car, a Pullman Bessemer plant logo, and the classy Lancaster and Chester stylized roadname graphics.  The “Springmaid Line” is a reference to the railroad’s one-time owners, Spring Mills, which is a textile company that became famous for producing towels, sheets, and other cotton textile products sold under brands such as Springmaid.  The railroad hauled both inbound materials and outbound finished goods.  The railroad also served other shippers in a region of South Carolina that is still a vibrant railcar consumer today.  The roof is painted with black car cement just like the prototype, and includes the typical Pullman overspray onto the top of it from the sides and at the ends.  Finally, these models ride on Tangent’s gorgeous Barber S-2 50-Ton plain bearing truck, complete with separate brake beam detail.  Our Lancaster & Chester models include a 1-52 shop date.
