Railroads used plug door boxcars for a wide variety of commodities which needed added protection from moisture. The 1960s saw many boxcars converted to these doors along with much more colorful paint schemes. The forty-foot cars remained in service through the 1970s and early 1980s before larger cars finally took their place.
