The John Wilkes was the Lehigh Valley Railroad’s premier streamlined passenger train, introduced in 1939 to provide first-class service between New York City and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Known for its elegant Cornell Red and black paint scheme, luxurious accommodations, and streamlined appearance, the John Wilkes became an icon of eastern railroading. Hauled first by streamlined steam locomotives and later by ALCO PA diesel locomotives, it remained the railroad’s flagship until passenger service ended in 1961. Today, it is remembered as one of the most distinctive and stylish passenger trains of the classic railroad era.
